Supermarket Chain Aeon to Rent Farmland

The Japanese government have introduced a new scheme which allows local governments to rent out farmland. Aeon, one of the biggest suprmarket chains in Japan, has announced it will establish and operate 30 farms across the country. The company already has 12 farms so this signals a hefty endorsement of this policy. The idea of the corporate farm has become an inevitability in Japan with aging farmers and little new blood entering the industry. While only licensed farmers may actually own farmland, it seems that the renting out of farmland maybe less onerous.
