Shinkansen (Bullet Train) Heads for Hokkaido

Date Added: 13/01/2012
It was reported in The Nikkei newspaper in December 2011, that the Japanese government is moving forward with some major infrastructure projects in 2012. There are three new shinkansen lines planned and one of these will run from Shin Hakodate to Sapporo which is around 300km of track. This valuable addition will make the trip up from the south that little bit faster and convenient and makes the final loop linking Niseko into the shinkansen network a much more realistic prospect. We understand that some of the very early planning work has been done for the Niseko area and await more specific timings. The new infrastructure projects are said to amount to 2.75 trillion Yen and have been made possible by a change in the law that lets the government access facility usage fees to finance new ventures such as this.
