Chinese Tourists Return to Japan in Big Numbers

An article in the Wall Street Journal describes how Chinese tourists have returned to Japan this winter, after initially being put off by the earthquake, tsunami and radiation problems emanating from Fukushima. Apparently, visitation was up 32% year on year in December as many headed for favourite spots in Tokyo such as Akihabara. Japan has set ambitious targets to increase tourism as it is increasingly seen as a vital element of the economy. It is hoped that some 20 million extra tourists will make their way to Japan by 2020 and around a third of that number are from China.

Speaking of Niseko where mainland Chinese visitors have not so far made their presence felt, it cannot be too long before this customer segment starts to impact here.
